Harare — DOMESTIC football is struggling to get into the groove after the end of its end-of-season break, but there can't be a better way to shake off some of the rust than a sequel of a Dynamos/Highlanders showdown.
The two big boys of Zimbabwean football meet again -- for the second time in as many weeks -- at Gwanzura tomorrow for Part II of the Nestle Champion of Champions Charity Shield contest.
The first game at Barbourfields ended in a 1-1 draw with Lazarus Muhoni scoring a late equaliser to cancel a goal by Wellington Sibanda.
While the duel in the City of Kings was rather a low-key event -- especially given the fierce battles that erupt whenever the two teams meet -- tomorrow's clash is likely to be a better show.
After all, there has to be a winner this time around.
The first leg was played in the comfort that the loser could always get a second bite of the cherry, but now the winner takes it all.
Dynamos have been boosted by the return of Edward Sadomba -- the tricky winger who finally agreed terms with the Harare giants last week.
Sadomba was an integral part of the DeMbare team that powered its way to a league and cup double -- ironically beating Bosso in the final of the CBZ FA Cup and beating them into second place in the league championship race.
That DeMbare won the CBZ FA Cup by beating Bosso at Barbourfields in the final hurt those who believe in the black-and-white royal forces.
It was something that was tantamount to a humiliation at home and while Shooting Stars' 4-1 comprehensive win over Bosso at Barbourfields was bad enough, losing to DeMbare -- even by a close 1-2 scoreline in the cup final -- really hurt.
But Highlanders showed that they could play well on the road and bravely held Dynamos to a goalless draw in the league at Gwanzura.
Those who believe in Bosso will tell you that all this is now part of history.
This year is a different ball game altogether and victory over DeMbare tomorrow will convince them that they were right to keep believing.
The game is very balanced and all that Bosso need to take the trophy to Bulawayo and claim the early bragging rights is to win -- by whatever scoreline.
Or they could force a draw -- anything like 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 or any scoring draw that is higher than 1-1.
Godfrey Japajapa, the co-ordinator of the Nestle Charity Shield Champion of Champions Trophy, revealed yesterday that away goals will count in the event of a draw in the aggregate scoreline.
What that means is that Dynamos will also capture the trophy should they force a goalless draw tomorrow with their away goal in Bulawayo counting double.
"We will apply the same rules that guide two-legged matches around the world and away goals will count double in the event of a draw," said Japajapa yesterday.
But what happens in the event that the game ends 1-1 just like at Barbourfields?
"The game will go straight away into a penalty shootout should it finish 1-1 again at Gwanzura. There will be no extra-time."
So the stage has been set for the big battle.
Both teams come into the game having won on the continent with Bosso destroying their Mozambican opponents 3-0 at Barbourfields and Dynamos winning 1-0 in Swaziland.
Highlanders introduced their new signing Cuthbert Malajila in that game against Ferroviario Nampula -- barely 72 hours after his arrival in Bulawayo.
The Golden Boot winner had a good game on his debut and, although he did not score, he did enough to convince his team's fans that he could lead the line in attack.
Whether he turns out to be another Ralph Matema, who proved a great investment for Bosso before he left for South Africa, will be proved by time.
Bosso played without a recognised striker against Dynamos in the first leg as they could not find an immediate replacement for young forward Obadiah Tarumbwa, who has found a new base in Belgium.
But if there was an outstanding performer for Bosso that day then it was prodigal son Gift Lunga, who returned home after two seasons at CAPS United.
Lunga put up a brilliant show in the first leg, reminiscent of the good old days when he was the golden boy in the City of Kings.
He was easily the man-of-the-match, pity those responsible of honouring players could not see that, and he deservedly got a call into the national team on the back of his strong performance.
But that would be the least of his worries as he returns to the capital for a war against the team Highlanders would love to beat.
Midfield anchorman Stephen Alumenda is also fitting into the Bosso system while skipper Gilbert Banda will always be a reliable source of strength at the back.
Dynamos coach David Mandigora started with a team that he wanted to use for the African Champions League when the two teams last met two weeks ago.
That meant new players like Mtshumayeli Moyo -- who have not been registered for the Champions League -- had to start from the bench.
But DeMbare struggled for rhythm and centre striker Sebastain Mutizirwa was a huge disappointment playing the killer role in the last line of attack.
Winger Benjamin Marere -- whose move to Dynamos had appeared to hit a snag until the Harare giants paid his agent this week -- also had a good game on the wing in the City of Kings.
But with the return of Sadomba, there is a battle for the rightwing position.
Skipper Murape Murape has yet to get into his stride -- maybe he is still enjoying the benefits that come with being the Soccer Star of the Year.
But Muhoni has already found his touch and another goal tomorrow will make him the new DeMbare hero.
Dynamos have just announced a new leadership led by Harare businessman Partson Moyo.
They appear to be a club that is beginning to find its way back to life after the madness of the past 10 years when they won virtually nothing.
Their club offices in the Eastlea suburb of Harare look decent and the league championship trophy and the CBZ FA Cup sit proudly in the main room.
The Nestle Charity Shield will be a welcome addition to that trophy cabinet.
The main curtain-raiser to the big match will be a $10 billion challenge match between Mafero Mafero against Milo Power.
Mafero Mafero are a super social football club based at Alex Sports Club in the capital under the leadership of Harare businessman Kenny "President" Nzou.
Some of their players include PSL fixtures secretary Japajapa, Warriors assistant team manager Charles "Mafripa" Dzvairo, Ali Sundowns media manager Dallas Sekawawana, former Douglas Warriors forward Bothwell Mahlengwe, former Shooting Stars chairman Lewis Matindife, former CAPS United secretary-general Wellington Dangarembizi and Eaglemoss boss Cosmos Nyachiya.
