Cameroon: Public Works Graduands Honoured

Peter N. Efande

25 February 2008

The 205 outgoing students were on Friday awarded diplomas and other meritorious prizes.

The Secretary of State at the Ministry of Public Works Mr Nyetam Nyetam Hans, has underscored the indispensable role that vocational and technical education plays in the socio-economic development of Cameroon. He was speaking in Buea on Friday during the graduation ceremony of 205 students from the National Advanced School of Public Works - Annex.

The Secretary of State cautioned the graduating students not to sit on their laurels but to be creative and put into practice the rich experience acquired after two years of intensive training. He lauded the remarkable strides made by the Government to reduce youth unemployment; stating that in a growing economy like that of Cameroon there is optimism for gainful employment through the diverse avenues in the job market. After reminding the staff of the Public Works institution that Government was not insensitive to their problems, Mr Nyetam Nyetam Hans enumerated some actions Government has taken and would take towards ameliorating the working conditions of the staff and the students in general.

Earlier, the Director of the National Advanced School of Public Works - Annex Buea Mr Kouontchou N. Emmanuel hailed Government's constant assistance to the institution; but like Oliver Twist he presented a litany of problems that need to be addressed. He cited the importance of constructing and equiping a permanent library, the recruitment of permanent and additional staff (more than 85 % have gone on retirement), service vehicles, about CFA 50 million to pay as teaching grants, etc. He called on the outgoing students to be creative, strive for self-employment and thanked SOGEA-SATOM, the South West Provincial Delegation of Public Works (amongst others) for organizing students' field trips.

Mr Biloa Gaetien (Inspector General at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), presented an academic discourse on the importance of rural engineering in a developing country like Cameroon. A students' representative harped on the difficulties of getting employed in the job market. It should be recalled that the National Advanced School of Public Works - Annex Buea trains Higher Technicians and Ordinary Technicians in the following options: Civil Engineering, Rural Engineering, Land Surveying and Town Planning.
