Zambia: Bandits Hack Police Woman

25 February 2008

Ndola — Four machete-wielding criminals yesterday stormed Nega Nega police station in Mazabuka where they hacked a police woman on the head and other parts of the body before they wrestled an AK 47 rifle from her.

The four pounced on Gweni Shamensi who was on duty around 01:30 hours and assaulted her as she screamed for help and got away with the rifle.

Mazabuka district police chief, Robison Moonga, could not give full details but indicated that he would issue a comprehensive report after getting a report of the incident from officers on the ground. Ms Shamensi, who has been admitted to Mazabuka district hospital, said the criminals only managed to snatch one AK 47 rifle adding that they could have stolen more if she did not scream for help.

"I was only rescued by my officer-in -charge after screaming for dear life. The criminals could have killed me if they used the gun they forcibly snatched from me," Ms Shamensi said from her hospital bed. Police have, howeve,r arrested two of the criminals behind the attack after they shot and wounded them in an exchange of fire. Two other criminals are on the run. The two suspects in police custody had been seriously wounded and would be taken to Mazabuka district hospital for treatment,

The four had almost managed to sneak out of Nega Nega but were cornered at a railway bridge near Kafue town where two of them were shot and wounded.
