Nigeria: D'Banj, Psquare, 2face Eye Hhwa Top Prize

Lagos — Judges for this year's Hip Hop world awards will have a Herculean task deciding who goes home as Artiste of the year.

The list of nominees, made available to Glitz Beats reveals 2face Idibia, Psquare, D'Banj and Olu contending for the prize. All best-sellers, and crowd pullers in their respective right, all four acts will slug it out, as they compete for fans' and judges' votes.

The list of nominees, in 17 categories, reveals that there's been immense creative activity in the scene since 2006.

That's why a lot of heavyweights are pitched against each other; in several categories- take for example, HipHopWorld revelation, where Asa, TY Bello, Olu Maintain, 9ice and Sasha are up for nomination.

'It's usually a difficult time, selecting winners out of loads of talents, but it'll even be tougher this year', says one of the judges who craves anonymity. 'Nigerian music is getting better, and between 2006 and now, it's unbelievable how much excellent music these acts have made.'

General top contenders include: 2face Idibia (seven nominations), Psquare (four nominations), TY Bello (four nominations), Mode 9 (six nominations), DJ Jimmy Jatt (five nominations) Asa (five nominations) and Olu Maintain (four nominations.

Meanwhile the organisers have announced that different prizes will be attached to major categories this year. A member of the central committee Emmanuel Malaka told Glitz Beats 'I can assure you that the winner of the Next Rated category will drive home in a brand new car. We're working on other prizes for other winners, and we'll let you know as soon as they're confirmed.

HHWA 2008 is scheduled to hold at Planet One, Maryland, Lagos on March 15, 2008.
