Ilorin — The 19 Northern states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioners for education have called on the Northern Governors Forum to expedite action in ensuring that the educational sector in the region is saved from total collapse.

The commissioners made the call in Ilorin at the weekend through the convener of their meeting and commissioner for education, Niger State, Hajiya Asmau Usman who noted that the situation of education in the North is worrisome.

Hajiya Usman in her speech said that the standard of education is getting worse day in day out, with the pupils who are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow at the receiving end.

"What was obtainable in our schools in those days is no longer there, and what we are being taught are different from what the students are now getting in terms of qualitative education. So I believe something needs to be done to salvage the situation", she said .

She explained that the meeting is expected to find a lasting solution to the problems of education in the North.

In his remarks at the occasion, the governor of Kwara State, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, commended the efforts of the commissioners for organising the meeting.
