Africa: Writers Sign MOU

The Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers' Association (PAWA), Prof. Atukwei Okai has, on behalf of the continental body, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the German Writers' Union (GWU) which, among others, seeks to promote African and German literature as integral parts of world literature.

The MOU mandates both parties to confer honorary membership of their respective associations on each other as well as collaborate in joint literary publications and other literary activities.

The agreement was signed on February 11, 2008 at the end of a two-day seminar of African and German Writers themed "Writers Meeting in Accra: Looking Ahead" at PAWA House in Accra.

The Secretary-General commended GWU for initiating the seminar and for reaching out to their colleague writers in Africa a move, he noted, would enhance mutual cultural appreciation of both bodies.

Mr. Imre Torok, President of GWU, signing on behalf of his Union, commended PAWA's effort in conscientising not just the people of Africa but the world at large.

At the two-day joint literary seminar organised by PAWA and GWU in collaboration with the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW), topics discussed included "The Relevance of Literature in Modern African Soceity", "The Role of Writers' Associations", "Intercultural Dialogue", and "Rights of Writers" by prominent writers and poets including Prof. Emeritus J.H. Kwabena Nketia, Prof. Emerita Anne Adams, Mr. Kwesi Anim-Addo, Prof. A.N. Mensah, Dr. Mohammed Ben-Abdallah, and Alex Agyei-Agyiri among others.

The three-member delegation from Germany was made up of its President, Mr. Imre Torok, Madam Annelies Schwarz and Mr. Jurgen Jankofsky.

As a show of appreciation, Prof. Okai presented a wooden stool and a plaque of a Ghanaian drummer to the GWU. The German delegation reciprocated the gesture by presenting a collection of books by the members of the German delegation to PAWA.
