Nigeria: Arrested Drug Peddlers Ingest 166 Wraps of Cocaine

Lagos — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has continued to ridicule the tricks employed by drug peddlers at the nation's airports with the arrest of two suspected drug couriers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) who ingested 166 wraps of cocaine.

One of the suspects, a 36-year old Egeonu Martin Nnamdi was caught on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at about 10 pm while trying to board a Turkish Airline flight to Istanbul.

He ingested 66 wraps of narcotics that tested positive for cocaine as well as packing 2.4 kilogrammes of the drug on his body.

In addition to the 66 wraps of cocaine, 2.4 kilogrammes of same drug was neatly taped to his waist. Martin said that he was a successful business man until he was duped N3 million, a situation that lured him into drug trafficking.

He also said that he was deceived by his sponsor who told him that he should do it and that he will not be caught. "Since I was in serious financial difficulty I believed him. He promised to pay me $1,500 per kilogramme. See now I have been caught and my wife is pregnant. She will put to bed in the next two weeks" Martin lamented.

The suspect hails from Amaigbo town in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.

The second suspect, Chidibere Charles Adamemium ingested a total of 100 wraps of substance that proved positive for cocaine.

The 27 year old suspect works as a gardener in Rimini, Italy. Chidibere came to Nigeria on February 9, 2008 to smuggle narcotics to Milan. He was found to have ingested hard drugs during the screening of passengers traveling to Milan in an Alitalia flight on Thursday February 21, 2008 at about 9 pm. Chidibere is a native of Ngbo in Ebonyi State.

On Monday February 18, 2008 at about 7 pm one Jude Ejike Ano was arrested at the arrival wing of the airport with 6.5 kilogrammes of cocaine in on his way from Brazil. The arrest was made during the inward screening of passengers in an Emirate flight from Brazil. The powdery substance that proved positive for cocaine was craftily concealed inside shower heads in his luggage.

He traveled with a Guinean passport with the name Barry Isa Ano. Jude hails from Udi-Umabia in Enugu State. The suspects, according to a statement from the agency are currently under observation and will soon be charged to court.
