How much will students pay as annual fees at the University of Mauritius (UoM) as from next August?

The rise in university fees will vary from 20 to 30%. The general fee will go from Rs 10,200 to about Rs 14,000 for first year and second year students. Those starting their master degree or their PhD should also be affected by the increase, as their general fees have gone from Rs 12,000 to Rs 16,000. New fees like dissertation fees will also be introduced - Rs 3,000 for those preparing their diploma and Rs 6,000 for those working on their master degree. Sending applications will also cost more - from Rs 600 to 1,000 but this sum is reimbursed to those who are not accepted at the UoM.

What was the reaction of students?

These new measures were accepted by the Students' Union, reveals the chairman of the UoM, Soodarsun Jugessur. Even though they can't understand why they should pay dissertation fees, they nevertheless agree on the necessity to increase general fees. The UoM is in such a difficult financial situation that there seems to be no other solutions.

What has been done to try and improve that situation?

The UoM has asked for an increase in the budget allocated by the government but the rise has not really met the expectations. The UoM also intended to introduce tuition fees but the ministry of Education simply refused. Thanks to the new rise in general fees, the UoM will hopefully be able to get out of the financial crisis.
