Lagos — NIGER State Governor, Alhaji Babangida Aliyu, has said the state was embarking on a Private Partnership Programme (PPP) with the Federal Government to make the Minna Airport a cargo airport.

The Special Assistant, Media and Communication to the governor, Mr Emmanuel Makun, who made this known at the Presidential Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, during the governor's visit, said that the state which is blessed with agricultural products, mainly rice, would use the adjoining land around the Minna Airport to produce more agricultural products.

He said the state was interested in the partnership programme due to its prudence, sense of belonging, accountability and transparency of the programme.

According to him, the airport which has not been put into proper use, will henceforth be used to decongest the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, which would generate more revenue when some part of the land is utilised for something else like agriculture.

"The airport there has been dormant. It is a very big airport. Why not utilise part of it for something else that would generate more revenue for the government?" he asked.

Mr Makun said further that the state is partnering with the private sector in the areas of tourism, agriculture and industrialisation. Other sectors are education and health.
