Nigeria: Nullified! Tribunal Ousts Orji

Aba — ABIA State Election Petitions Tribunal yesterday nullified the election of Chief Theodore Orji as governor of the state and declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu as winner of the April 14, 2007 governorship poll. Ruling on the petition filed by Chief Ugochukwu, the tribunal chairman, Justice Yusuf Abdullahi said Chief Orji who was the governorship candidate of the Progressive People Alliance (PPA) and his deputy, Chief Chris Akomas, did not resign from their offices as stipulated by law before contesting the election.

The tribunal said one of the witnesses called by the petitioner tendered the salary slip of Orji and Akomas as staff of Abia State civil service and lived in government quarters prior to the poll.
