Once again the population of Buea, Capital of the South West Province, spent another end-of year festivities in street darkness. Buea community Mayor, Mbella Moki Charles, expressed dismay at AES / SONEL during a council session held recently.

The Mayor explained that he had contacted AES/SONEL authorities several times to light the hanging street bulbs to no avail. For over two years, the street lights erected after the construction of the Mile 17 - Police junction-boulevard in 2002, have remained a decoration than anything that can serve the public. "They told me it would be too heavy for their line," the Mayor reported to Buea's 41 councilors and a host of personalities during the Council session. The Buea Council session held their first joint and second Ordinary sessions and adopted a 600 million budget for 2008. Mr. Malafa, Assistant Senior Divisional Officer for Fako sat in for his boss and challenged the elected Councilors to keep to their electioneering promises so that Buea could enjoy a fostered development.

During the session, Mayor Mbella Moki urged his fellow councilors to adjust their attitudes especially in public places or else "we shall not hesitate to recommend suspension and subsequent dismissal of councilors who falter morally and otherwise". The Mayor condemned senseless gossips, blackmail and witch hunting, which he said, were fast becoming a stock in trade within the Buea Community. Mbella Moki sued to lead where he observed others were seeking to destroy. In the area of development, the Mayor reported his collaboration with the RUMPI Project to provide potable water for Ewonda village. He said the council was equally working to extend the Molyko, Wokoko, Bonduma water project.

The audience was informed of the "clean city programme", which Mayor Moki explained was on course. A firm promise was made by the Mayor to begin the new council office structure at Great Soppo opposite Clerks Quarters in the days ahead. He equally announced that all marriages and birth declarations must be accompanied by a tree -planting exercise so as to keep Buea green.
