A delegation of Canadian business people, representing 11 companies, arrived in Maputo on Sunday for a two day visit to assess business opportunities in Mozambique.

The delegation met with representatives of the Mozambican private sector in Maputo on Monday to exchange experiences on how to do business in this country, and obtain information on potential areas for investment.

Canadian companies are currently mainly involved in mining projects, and oil exploration. But speaking on the occasion, the Canadian High Commissioner to Mozambique, James Hill, said that his country wants to strengthen its presence in Mozambique through investments in other areas of development.

"The idea behind the visit of these business people is to show that there are more investment opportunities in Mozambique. By investing in Mozambique, we want to expand our presence in this country. We also want to be in other sectors, such as trade", said Hill.

He stressed that conditions to attract investments in Mozambique have been changing, which can be seen in the improvement of this country's position in the "Doing Business" ranking of the World Bank.

Mozambique is now placed in the position 134 in terms of 'Doing Business', on a list of 178 countries. Diplomats, and even government officials, have come to put considerable trust on this annual World Bank publication, even though it is based on entirely anonymous sources, and riddled with inaccuracies.

For his part, the representative of the government's Investment Promotion Centre (CPI), Nuno Maposse, told the visitors that there are many business opportunities that Canadians can take advantage of.

As examples, he mentioned the possibilities of commercial agriculture in the Zambezi Valley, and the tourism and agri-business undertakings that are possible along the Nacala Development Corridor, in the north of the country.

Trade and Industry Minister Antonio Fernando said that the government has been working to improve services to the common citizen and to business people. He added, however, that the government does not feel comfortable with the results so far attained, because other countries, competing with Mozambique in terms of attracting investments, are far more advanced.

"The improvement of the business environment remains at the centre of our government's attentions, hence it has been carrying out a number of actions in the last few years to design the necessary strategies, including simplifying licensing procedures, setting up single attendance counters (where would-be investors can obtain all the documents and forms they need at one place), and the creation of a Business Information Centre", he said.
