A new poetry group, Art of Da Poets, made up of mostly young up and coming poets, held a poetry session at The Village Cinema last Friday. The session saw young poets, who are of school going age showcase their poetry and hip-hop skills.

One of the performers, Hazel recited a poem called I Learn To Live With A Black Person that says in part:

People used to love me

They used to bow down in front of me as if I was a queen

But that was before

I learnt to live with a black person

I am just a teen

Trying to find where my move of life leads

I try to find through poetry

Only the spoken word

I mean through Art Of Da Poets

The trio of Dr Love, Dumi-the Dolphin and Leungo gave one of the sterling performances of the evening. Their poem had a dash of drama to it.

Young and hippy MC Clips' True Minds was also a nice piece. True Minds says in part:I am stuck with this game like a nail and a finger. You should blame your heart if you fear me.

And I will blame my hear if I fear you.

Other performers of the night included Keal, DC and Gypsy.

Although the young poets are ambitious and confident about their performances, it is clear that they need to be mentored so they can hone their skills. Some of the poets lacked stage presence and some of the performances were not catchy. The directors of ceremony also killed the show by failing to introduce performers at times. However, some of the young performers are promising.

Art of Da Poetry was founded by 18-year-old Thabiso Ramosamo together with Teko Ramosamo, Tshepo Gaebuse and Tumelo Ramosamo.

According to Thabiso Ramosamo, "poetry is a means to communicate in a smoother way and it is a link between tradition, history and the present".

"We want people to understand what poetry is and we, through poetry, are living what our forefathers lived before we were born," added Ramosamo.

Ramosamo also said that the group welcomes poets who are not part of the group to perform at their sessions.

Some of the members of the group started off performing during the 'open mic' slots at Exodus Live Poetry sessions.

Ramosamo also said that the main objective of the Art of Da Poets is to raise awareness about the existence of poetry in Botswana.
