Nigeria and Niger Republic have resolved to agree on a common front in the stabilization of foodstuff.

Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Abba Sayyadi Ruma, made the disclosure at a meeting with his Nigerien counterpart, Amindu Tassidu, in Abuja.

He said the Nigerian government and that of Niger would agree on a common consensus on the stabilization of the prices of foodstuffs in both countries. He said with the free movement of persons and goods between the two countries, it was imperative to stabilize the prices of foodstuffs which has been the major trading commodities among these countries.

"The essence of price stabilization is to cushion the effect of price increase both on the local producers and the consumers," he said.

The Nigerien Minister said his country will partner with Nigeria in all development aspects because of common historical and trade ties. He said the two countries stand a good chance to gain from each other since they share common borders.

He said his mission to Nigeria is to discuss a new date for the next summit of Chad Basin Commission chaired by the the President of Niger and that of Niger Basin Authority with the Nigerian President.

Earlier, Dr. Ruma had informed his counterpart that the Nigerian government has set aside a huge amount of money in the 2008 budget for the water resources sector mainly to improve irrigation facilities throughout the country in its bid to guarantee food security.
