Mozambique: Japanese Support for Victims of Floods And Aids

27 February 2008

Maputo — The Japanese government announced on Wednesday a grant of six million US dollars to Mozambique, to support the victims of flooding in the centre of the country, and of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The money will be channeled to the World Food Programme (WFP) and to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). According to a joint statement from the Japanese Embassy, WFP and UNICEF, each of the UN agencies will receive three million dollars.

With its share of the money, the WFP will buy foodstuffs from local producers to support families displaced by the floods. Orphans and vulnerable children, and people living with HIV/AIDs will also benefit from WFP support.

For its part, UNICEF will use the money in programmes undertaken in partnership with Mozambican local authorities to improve the quality of education in 90 schools in flood affected provinces, and in the southern district of Chibuto, which is not a flood-affected area.

The money is part of a Japanese budget of 264.6 million dollars to support humanitarian and reconstruction actions throughout Africa.
