Ethiopia: Japan Supports Schools in Amhara Region

Japan-assisted school construction and extension projects for, respectively, the Abima Primary School in Debre Markos and the Rebugebya High School in Senan Woreda, East Gojam were inaugurated on Sunday.
In East Gojam zone, the Japanese Government also assisted the expansion of the Gojamber Senior Secondary School in Dejen and Gozamin High School in Gozaminlast year.
These projects were funded through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (GGP), which is designed to provide assistance to development projects that are implemented by non-profit organizations, including non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations and local government.
Some 90,671 US dollars of the grant money was used to construct one G+1 classroom block and one library for the Abima Primary School and 79,273 US dollars to construct three blocks of classrooms and to purchase 240 combined desks for the Rebugebya High School.
More than 3,000 students were obliged to study in the existing old classrooms at the Abima Primary School, a full-cycle primary school constructed more than 45 years ago.
The project will enable as many as 4,000 students to study in an improved learning environment, according to the embassy.
In October 2005, a grant contract was signed between the Embassy of Japan and a local organization called "Rebugebya High School Construction Committee", for the amount. The grant money was used to construct three blocks of classrooms and to purchase 240 combineddesks.
Japanese ambassador to Ethiopia Kinichi Komano, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, stressed Japan's commitment to assisting the vulnerable and marginalized people in Ethiopia, according to a media statement from the embassy He also said that education is a very important sector by presenting the example of Japan where education and human capacity building played a major role in the country's economic and social development.
During the past 11 years, the Japanese Government has supported more than 100 education projects all over Ethiopia, amounting in total to 7.4 million US dollars in grant. In FY2007 alone, the Embassy of Japan signed grant contracts for 14education projects, amounting to more than 1.1 million US dollars in total.
