Kampala — OVER 400 Kenyan refugee children have registered for primary and early childhood education at Mulanda transit centre. The pupils are studying according to the Kenyan education curriculum.
The four-classroom block has been turned into a primary school, while the children having nursery lessons are studying under a mango tree.
Francis Githinji, a Kenyan volunteer head teacher at the primary school, said 361 pupils had registered from Primary One to Eight. The school has nine volunteer teachers.
"We combine pupils from two classes in each room, like P7 and P8 because we have inadequate resources. The pupil's attendance fluctuates but it will stabilise with time," he said in an interview with The New Vision recently.
The school has English, Science, Kiswahili, Social Studies and Christian Religious Education lessons.
Githinji said the teachers also counsel the pupils traumatised by the post-election violence.
"Some ask us why we are in camps. We tell them we are here temporarily."
The scholastic materials were provided by Save the Children. Aisha Hamisi, the leader of the nursery section, said 117 children had registered for baby, middle and upper classes.
