Zimbabwe: Zimpost Acquires Motobikes for Letter Delivery Service

28 February 2008

Harare — Postal services provider, Zimpost has introduced motorised letter delivery service as part of efforts to improve efficiency and ensure timely delivery.

Managing director Douglas Zimbango told New Ziana this week that over 30 motorbikes had already been acquired to start the service. Zimpost postmen have until now been using bicycles for mail deliveries. The motorised service would initially cater for clients in Harare and Bulawayo before it is spread to other parts of the country, he said. "The service is already being provided in the capital but is due to start in some areas as workers are still being trained," he said. Zimbango, however, pointed out that efficiency and continued provision of the service would largely depend on availability of fuel. "Part of our fuel requirements is provided by the National Oil Company of Zimbabwe while we also import some of the fuel using our foreign currency resources," he said.

The company has bemoaned a decline in mail business which is facing stiff challenge from the introduction of new technologies and other communication tools such as the electronic mail which have reduced the need for writing letters physically. Withdrawal of international airlines from the country had also affected its ability to timely move mail from and into the country, Zimbango said.

Air Zimbabwe, South Africa and Kenyan Airways are the only airlines that Zimpost is using to send international mail, which they then forward to other airlines to reach the intended destination.
