Mrs. Chantal Biya was hailed for her continuous concern to help women in computer technology

After seven other Provinces, the South West Province now has its own Multi - Media Centre in an ongoing programme to equip the ten provinces (regions) with information and communication technology through the Women's Association of Post and Telecommunications (WAPOSTEL).

A dual ceremony to inaugurate the Buea WAPOSTEL Multi Media Centre and to award end of course certificates to thirty persons already trained in the centre was held on the 23rd of February at the Buea P&T School. Representing the South West Governor was his Chief of Cabinet, Ngale Beende, amidst high level personalities from the nation's capital, Yaoundé. Among such dignitaries, Mrs. Ndoh Bertha, Special Adviser to the Prime Minister and Head of Government, expressed gratitude to Mrs. Chantal Biya who is patroness of all the WAPOSTEL Multimedia Centres across the country.

The Buea Multi Media Centre is named after Mrs. Annick Gerster of Orange Cameroon. Speaking as guest of honour, Mrs. Gerster expressed her wish that South West women would develop keen interest in the centre to facilitate women groups integration for a free- flow of knowledge, to gain business openings and to narrow the gap between men and women for better opportunities. She urged all women to take full advantage of the centre in other to catch up with the train of the new world of technological advancements.

The national president of WAPOSTEL, Mrs. J. R. Siewe Ngongang used the Buea occasion to restate her call for unity amongst women of the Posts and Telecommunications sector so as to combat inertia and gain their rightful place in society. She explained that some 500 computers were obtained by WAPOSTEL and are currently being distributed throughout the national territory. Buea's centre for the South West has ten computers linked to the internet and is coming after six other places in the Centre, Littoral, South, North, and West Provinces.

The WAPOSTEL has been striving for the past thirteen years to unite women working in the domain of Posts and Telecommunications to constitute a joint force to improve on their lot. They have thought it wise to use the ICT tools to foster development among themselves. Marie Germaine Ndzie coordinated the Buea ceremony which was animated by local and visiting musicians and dance groups. The Buea chapter president of WAPOSTEL, Ngolah Florence, addressed the occasion, stating the South West women's thirst for such an opportunity offered them by WAPOSTEL and its patroness.
