Uganda: Painting It Real And Simple

Stephen Ssenkaaba

Kampala — THOSE who detest simplicity do not find realism in art appealing. But for the less sophisticated art viewers, "putting it as it is", is the best way to communicate. But the argument has always been that if you cannot do it better than the camera, then why do it at all?

Enock Kyambadde's work is nowhere near picture perfect, yet it contains the tenets of realism - undistorted forms, predictable patterns and plain colour schemes.

The young, Leisure and Hospitality student of Makerere University Business School recently exhibited his latest collection of paintings at the Nommo Gallery.

Kyambaddde's paintings depict nature, inspired by his rural upbringing.

His style depicts less freedom and inclination to experimentation with colour, forms and materials. But it contains that easy-on-the-eye character.

Before this, his work did not have much originality as it portrayed borrowed themes and styles. However, this has gradually changed.

Even though his style is not particularly outstanding, this upcoming artist manages to manoeuvre his way around visually appealing subjects.
