Emmanuel Kendemeh

29 February 2008

The National Elections Observatory (NEO) and Commonwealth officials yesterday held discussions in Yaounde.

The members of the Commonwealth delegation currently following up the electoral reforms in Cameroon, with focus on the putting in place of the independent election managing body Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) were yesterday at the National Elections Observatory (NEO). They held discussions with the authorities of NEO presided over by the its Chairman, François-Xavier Mbouyom.

After the discussions, Mark Stephens, Adviser and Head of Democracy Section, Political Affairs Division at the Commonwealth Secretariat told journalists, "we have been discussing electoral issues with NEO, to try to get lessons learned and their experiences on election matters". NEO controlled and supervised the 2002 and 2007 council and legislative elections on the one hand, and the presidential election of October 2004 on the other hand. From June 2008, the new independent body, ELECAM to organise, control and supervise all future elections and referenda in Cameroon, will effectively go into force. "The Commonwealth hopes to remain very engaged to support the development of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) and to build its capacity for independence", Mark Stephens said.
