Kenya: Alliance Blames Poor Results On Exam Leakage

1 March 2008

Nairobi — LAST year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education KCSE results have baffled academic giant, Alliance Boys High School.

From second position in 2006, the school tumbled to position eight, barely making it to the top ten nationally.

And the school authorities have cried foul and pointed fingers at the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).

Yesterday, the school deputy principal, Mr Francis Ndirangu, attributed the poor results to the purported leakage of exams reported last year.

"Due to the leakage of the KCSE exams the best brains will be locked out of higher learning institutions while those who cheated will take up their places," he told The Saturday Standard.

He challenged KNEC to clean up its act and restore credibility to the national examinations.

"Reputable international and national universities admit Kenyan students based on their KCSE results. If these exams lose credibility what will happen to our students?" he posed.

Ndirangu said they were shocked that their best form four candidates so far had not performed as expected.

"We worked extra hard. Both the teachers and parents supported the students. We now want KNEC to prepare a profile of each school and tell us where we went wrong," he said.

He also queried why several academic giants failed to impress. He said the fact that not just Alliance dropped in its performance indicated that exams were leaked.

"Students who genuinely work hard will be discouraged since they will soon realise the competition is not fair," he said.

The school's outgoing principal, Mr Christopher Khaemba, was said to be in South Africa.

Ndirangu said Khaemba had received the news and was equally disappointed.

Khaemba is leaving the School in September to head the African Leadership Academy in South Africa.
