TEN Nigerian artists, who recently excelled in an international art exhibition and competition entitled "The Unbreakable Nigeria Spirit", held in different cities of the country would be sponsored by Nigeria Breweries Plc to Amsterdam, Holland to showcase their budding talents in April 2008.
The competition organised by the African Artists' Foundation (AAF) in collaboration with the Nigerian Breweries saw to the emergence of 10 including Oladimeji Alabi, Emeka Ogboh, Gerald Chukwuma, Segun Aiyesan and Yomi Momoh.
Others are Gbolahan Ayoola, Emmanuel Dudu, Adetola Wewe, Emeka Obanor and Adolphus Opara. They were chosen from an initial list of 30 top artists that were shortlisted for the final stage of the competition, out of more than 300 entries received.
In his remarks at the occasion, Mr. Michiel Herkemij, managing director/chief executive, Nigerian Breweries, congratulated the winners, describing them as the next generation of artists in the country. Commending the artists for the high quality of their works, he said this has shown that raw talents exist in the country.
Herkemij expressed the hope that the proposed exhibition in Lagos from February 27, to March 4, Abuja, March 12, to March 15, and Amsterdam, April 2, to 8, would give the 10 artists the desired level of exposure and an opportunity to market themselves to connoisseurs of art.
He added that the initiative was part of the Company's corporate social responsibility initiatives, which he said now includes promotion of the arts.
Similarly, Mr. Azu Nwagbogu, Chairman, AAF, commended Nigerian Breweries for partnering the foundation to organise the competition, noting that it would give local artists a new lease of life.
Mr. Thom de Man, Regional President, Heineken Africa and Middle East, later presented certificates to the 10 winners, assisted by Mr. Frank Okonta, a member of the jury. Herkemij and Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, another member of the panel, had earlier presented the certificates to the final 30.
Some of the criterion that the judges considered included "works with visual and intellectual coherence, thoughtfulness and emotional integrity, intuitive pieces; and works that described something meaningful, experiential and authentic."
Professor (Olorogun) Perkins Foss, an art historian from Yale University headed the panel of judges, which has prominent stakeholders in the Nigerian art industry as members. Foss, a leading expert on African art, expressed satisfaction with the quality of entries received for the competition, saying that Nigerian art occupies a pride of place in the global arena.
He said it would promote local artistes and give them the much-needed international exposure, adding that the jury had a tough time picking the winning entries due to the high quality of works received.
Commending the organizers for the initiative, Wewe, one of the Amsterdam-bound artists and owner of the popular Tola Wewe Art Gallery in Lagos, said the exposure the winners would get, cannot be quantified in monetary terms.
