Nigeria: Federal Poly Expels 133 Students Over Forgery

3 March 2008

Lagos — No fewer than 133 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa in Nasarawa State, have been expelled for certificate falsification and examination malpractice. The Rector of the Polytechnic, Mr Pius Salami made these known last Saturday in Nasarawa, at the matriculation of new students of the institution.

This is as the Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Alhassan Zaku said weekend in Abuja that the Fedeal government would soon address the disparity between polytechnic and university education.

Salami said that four other students were dismissed for cultism. He said the institution regarded indiscipline and cultism as grave offences, adding that this informed the decision to compel new intakes to pledge to reject the vices in their oath of admission.

The Rector also said the polytechnic had set up a certificate screening committee, adding "any student found to be deficient would be shown the way out." Salami said the institution would continue to work with the police and other security agencies to fish out students involved in cultism.

He said 4,171 students were admitted for HND, ND, pre- HND as well as pre-ND programmes in the 2007/2008 session.
