Botswana: Prof Tlou to Receive Nursing Award

3 March 2008

The Minister of Health, Professor Sheila Tlou, has been awarded the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) President's award. The award is in recognition of her outstanding contributions to health and health care. It will be conferred later this year in Arizona, USA.

The Academy's 1,500 members - known as Fellows - are nursing's most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice and research. The academy serves both the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge.

Through investment in research, the academy is able to address emerging global health issues and to transform global health policy.

This is the third award that Tlou has received within nine months. In June 2007, she received the 'World YWCA Woman Leading Change Award' for leadership in the response against HIV/AIDS, presented by Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki.

In November 2007, she received the Michael Kelly Award for Distinguished Service in Health and HIV/AIDS and she was hosted by the Irish Ministry of Foreign Aid and Development.

Her other awards include the Emang Basadi Award for Distinguished Leadership in HIV/AIDS (2002), the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Nurses Association of Botswana (2004), the Florence Nightingale Award from the International Red Cross Society in Geneva (2003), the Botswana Presidential Order of Honour (2002), and the Anna Reynvaan Award from The Netherlands (2002).

Of the AAN award, Tlou has this to say," It is touching to be recognised by one's profession locally and internationally. I must state, however that the positive health trends being witnessed in Botswana are a result of concerted efforts by all stakeholders in the health sector. I will accept the award on their behalf".
