Bujumbura — The main opposition party, Sahwanya Frodebu, calls on the head of state to intervene in order to end the crisis in the national assembly. Today, the leader of Frodebu, Hon Ngendakumana, held a press conference to give his party's position on the stalemate in the National assembly.
Hon Léonce Ngendakumana said that CNDD-FDD is the cause of the current stalemate. He said that the ruling party has always refused to rule in accordance with the constitution, adding that since CNDD-FDD came to power in 2005, it succeeded in setting up a constitutional cabinet on 28 November 2007 only after strong pressure from opposition parties, civil society, and the international community. Hon Léonce Ngendakumana says that CNND-FDD seeks to rule in the country just as they operated when they were an armed movement hiding in the bush.
The ruling party has rejected these allegations and claims the problem rests in the lack of quorum resulting from Frodebu's decision to boycott plenary sessions in the national assembly. The CNDD is resolved to wait until the required quorum is reached.
The ruling party is struggling to replace Alice Nzomukunda as leader of the national assembly, but their plan has backfired. After a month of wrangling, the ruling party has not succeeded in getting the required quorum to expel Alice Nzomukunda from her position in the national assembly, although they easily dismissed her from their party. Uprona, which initially gave support to CNDD's plan, has changed its position, resulting lack of quorum.
