Harare — Exceptional! This would be the best word to sum up Tongai Moyo's much-anticipated weekend gigs he staged in the capital and Marondera respectively.
Besides getting money for his medical bills, Moyo realised that he still commands a huge following despite his absence on the entertainment scene for some time. The Pamuzinda Highway Xscape affair, his first show in Harare this year, was unquestionably one to remember for Utakataka Express followers. What was most striking about this particular affair was the big and appreciative crowd that turned out for the show when Oliver Mtukudzi among other top artistes was also playing in Harare.
Even Moyo, who calls himself Igwe (Nigerian vernacular for chief), was surprised by the rapturous reception he got when he appeared on stage. He reciprocated with a well-choreographed act that engaged the crowd from start to finish.
Those that had written him off were left convinced that Dhewa was arguably one of the best performers in sungura if his well-coordinated stagecraft is anything to go by.
Moyo, who played both old and new songs, was also complemented by his dancers. Assegai Crew and Dino Mudondo complemented him. On Saturday, Moyo had another show in Marondera with reports from the Mashonaland East capital saying he enthralled revellers with a five star act. On Sunday, Moyo returned to the capital for a family show he staged at the Harare Gardens where he dazzled fans with another inspired act. After two nights of playing, Moyo was still energetic and one wondered where he got all the energy to keep going.
Show promoter Chris Musabayana was also ecstatic with the response that he got from this particular family show.
Moyo also cemented his relationship with other musicians at this particular occasion when Sulumani Chimbetu and Progress Chipfumo joined him on staged when he belted out the catchy hit Wakanaka.
It was also inspiring to see other musicians supporting one of their brothers at a time when he was down. He also belted material from his upcoming album with the song Maths proving popular with fans.
It was also encouraging to hear the crowd singing along when he played the song.
Again, Moyo was supported by Assegai Crew and Chipfumo.
