Nigeria: NCC to Provide 440 Schools With Internet Centers

At least 440 secondary schools are to benefit from two projects from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) with Internet Centers before end of this year, an official said.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Engineer Ernest Ndukwe said this Friday at the commissioning of the Two Internet Centers in Queens Comprehensive Secondary School and Unity Secondary Schools both in Enugu under the Commission's Digital Awareness Program (DAP).

"It is planned that in 2008 about 80 schools will benefit from this program. This is in addition to the 360 schools being targeted in the School Access Program of the universal Service Fund Secretariat," Ndukwe said.

He said as at today about 141 schools and colleges have benefited from this initiative, adding under the program, the selected institution is equipped with computer laboratories fully installed with about 20 sets of computers, furniture and Internet connections.

According to him, in most locations, these facilities are backed-up with structural renovation of buildings and supply of air conditioners and power generators.

Ndukwe said the main objective of the program is to provide basic training for the students and the teachers of computer literacy.

He said the world today consider computer and information literacy as necessary," What this indicates is that if introduced early, ICT can easily become part of the everyday tool of the young people who will grow to become active and productive members of the emerging knowledge societies. This has been the motivation for DAP"

He urged that students of put the facilities provided to its optimal use, saying the centers are for the entire students not some because internet now is the biggest source of information"

On this part, the governor of Enugu state, Chief Sullivan Chime charged the schools authorities to make good use of the centers , we are restring the lost glory of Enugu.

"We have made education free in some tiers and we're keen in developing infrastructure to support our people quest for development".

The governor represented by his deputy, Mr Sunday Onyebuchi commended NCC's initiative and urged for more partnership between the Enugu state government and the Commission"
