Halima Musa, Kano

6 March 2008

A High Court in Kano, yesterday fixed the 28th of April, 2008 for the commencement of hearing into the ongoing legal tussle between the international pharmaceutical company, Pfizer and the Kano State government over the trovan trial conducted by the company in 1996.

The court presided over by Justice Shehu Atiku, also granted bail to the Managing Director of Neimeth Company, Mr. Sam Ohuabunwa, who is the sixth accused person in the trial.

The court laid as bail condition, the deposit of N5m, two recognized sureties and an international passport of the accused person.

Justice Shehu explained that the Court set aside 28th to 30th of April for hearing of the case with all the applications to be brought to all parties involved on the same day.

Earlier, before the court's decision, the defence counsel, Barrister Aliyu Umar, argued that the continued adjournment of the case had caused delay.

Barrister Umar who is also the state's Attorney General, appealed to the court to bring the other accused persons involved for the continuation of the case.

He prayed the Court that the case should not be delayed anymore.

It would be recalled that the Kano State government had sued Pfizer pharmaceutical company to court over the trovan trials conducted by the company which caused death and serious deficiency to over 200 children in Kano.
