The week-long activities are geared towards environmental protection.

Aseries of educative activities are being carried out throughout the ten provinces of Cameroon within the framework of the 2008 Commonwealth week. The activities involve many actors notably ministries, diplomatic missions accredited to Cameroon, private and semi-public companies, Non -governmental Organisations (NGOs) and youths from universities and colleges.

Cameroon's Minister of External Relations, Henri Eyebe Ayissi officially launched the 2008 Commonwealth week in Yaounde on Tuesday. He called on the whole international community to adopted concerted actions in fighting environmental degradation, and climate change that all have negative socio-economic consequences and jeopardise life for future generations. The Minister's call only came to add to songs, sketches and poems presented on the occasion, all centred on the theme of the 2008 Commonwealth Week, "The Environment: Our Future".

Even before the official launching of the week-long activities that will culminate in the 2008 Commonwealth Day on 10 March, students from the ten provinces were already in full activity. On 01 March, they wrote an essay competition on environmental issues. The best three students per province yesterday wrote an essay competition still on environmental issues in quest of the national prizes. As the essay competition went on, there were also drilling exercises on environmental protection in some selected schools. Sports competitions among Commonwealth Clubs in various secondary schools equally took place yesterday.
