The head of the joint IMF/World Bank/ADB mission made the declaration yesterday after two- week economic evaluation.

The joint mission of the International Monetary Fund, the World bank and the African Development Bank ended yesterday in Yaounde on a happy note. This is the impression the head of the delegation, Dhaneshwar Ghura gave to pressmen after a final evaluation meeting with the Minister of Finance, Essimi Menye and the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Louis Paul Motaze.

"We had very fruitful discussions with the government on the fifth economic and financial review programme supported by the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF)", Ghura said. The IMF official said, his delegation had taken "good note of the preoccupations of the population» and was glad that government is already preparing a number of measures to address some of the preoccupations. "The IMF will continue discussions with the government", he assured, recalling the role of his institution which is to help Cameroon address these challenges in a framework that ensures sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.

As to whether the margin is rife for an improvement in the remuneration of civil servants' salary, he said; "the government is already making simulations and we are open to proposals for discussions." Dhaneshwar Ghura and his delegation had working sessions from February 21 to March 06 with Cameroonian authorities, donor organisations, members of the civil society and the private sector. Discussions which took place behind closed doors focused on Cameroon's macroeconomic framework and the execution of the country's economic and financial programme up to December 31, 2007. Other issues tackled by the delegation included: public service reform programme, governance and privatisation of State enterprises.
