The managing director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Mr. Harry T. Nyuan has sharply accused some unscrupulous individuals for their alleged complicity in power theft and vandalism being carried out on the entity 's facilities in and around the city center.
Addressing a major news conference yesterday, the LEC boss disclosed that due to the action on the part of these individuals and the negative impact on the electricity grid losses have ranged from 6-13 percent of energy generated from the month of June last year.
Because of this, he explained that on numerous occasions, the Johnson Street lighting feeders are regularly been cut and removed; costing management between US $ 550 to US $ 1000 each time to replace the lighting facilities for the beautification and security at night in the city.
Explaining further Mr. Nyuan disclosed that similar incidents have been occurring on Broad Street, the heart of the city, where light feeders initially installed underground were frequently cut and taken away.
He said after a number of replacements, management resorted to feeding the lights by over head feeders.
Making startling revelations about the criminal electricity attitude being perpetrated by bandits which is becoming unbearable, if nothing is done to save the situation the story might likely be different in the not too distant future.
However he noted that the corporation is working with the relevant government authorities in a bid to arrest and prosecute those found in such wicked act.
The LEC managing director further added that the latest action been carried out by the criminals is the overhead street light feeders which are now being tampered with as in the case of the garden lights installed over the Broad Street beautification project widely known as the "Special Presidential Project."
In a bid to make the LEC a viable entity, Mr. Nyuan is urging the public to report anyone caught looting and vandalizing electrical materials or trying to connect to the system illegally by calling 05-635429 for rapid respond.
Meanwhile, the LEC managing director lamented that power theft has the ability to discourage donors who are helping in the electricity restoration, maintenance and expansion plan of Liberia in its bid to provide electricity to most Liberians.

Mr. Nyuan also spoke on one major key factor that he said is hampering the work of the entity; stressing that fuel oil to generate her thermal- based power system.
The LEC boss narrated that the increase in the price of petroleum has an adverse effect on the ability of the ability corporation to provide electricity continuously.
According to the managing director, his corporation has maintained a tariff to her customers at the cost of 34 cents per kilowatt-hour since October 2006 despite the increment on the international market.
Please make necessary correction on LEC Manager Director name Harry Yuan and not Harry Nyuan is you reported.
