The only two Yaounde based clubs in the 2007/2008 MTN Elite I Championship are topping the chart at both ends.
While Canon is comfortably leading the chart with 30 points at the end of the first round, Tonnerre is gnashing its teeth at the bottom of the table with only eleven points.Tonnerre President, Esomba Eyenga, returning from Ghana after the African Cup of Nations, replaced his coach with Richard Obatteba hoping to escape relegation as the second phase begins.
Canon that has not lost any match at home since the beginning of the 49th edition of the championship, has recorded 10 wins, seven at home and three away. They have also suffered five defeats.
Last year's leader, Cotonsport of Garoua are second on the table with 28 points, two behind Canon. The Coton pluckers from the North, who have the best attack with 20 goals, are closely followed by newly promoted Tiko United a.k.a Samba Boys with 25 points.
Tiko, which started the championship with vim and vigour, was topping the chart until they lost the last three games of the first round to equal Fovu of Baham who have registered 12 points in their last six games.
Tiko and Fovu of Baham are the third and fourth placed teams, respectively, with 25 points each.Staggering at the middle of the chart are Sable of Batie, Astre of Douala, Caiman Douala, Esperance of Guider, Unisport of Bafang and Aigle of Menoua. They have all barely managed to escape the relegation zone.
Tailing the table are Mount Cameroon FC of Buea, Union of Douala, University of Ngoundere, Lion Ngoma of Ebolowa, Foudre of Akonolinga and Tonnerre of Yaounde.Meantime, 184 goals were scored in the first round of the tournament.
The second round of the championships kicks off on Sunday, March 9, all over the national territory.According Martin Etonge, FECAFOOT Director of Competitions, everything has been put in place for the smooth running of the second phase. " Everything is going on smoothly, programming has been done far ahead of time and I think all is well for the take off."
