Cameroon: Sacked Nkambe Mayor At Daggers Drawn With Deputies

Chris Mbunwe

7 March 2008

Mayor Jones Mangoh Tanko of Nkambe Council is ill at ease with the behaviour of one of his Deputies and Councillor for what he terms misrepresentation on February 11.

In a letter, dated February 15, to Francis Baleri Nfor and Peter Nfor Kengwa, 3rd Deputy Mayor and Councillor respectively, Mayor Mangoh says he was informed that on February 11, during the Youth Day Celebrations, both wore sashes and presented themselves as Mayors in Njap Youth Day centre and Nwangsi Youth Day centre. The Mayor described the act by the councillor and Deputy as intolerable

The Nkambe Mayor insinuated that the multiplication of fake civil status documents in Nkambe municipality might have its origin from this misrepresentation. "I am therefore taking measures concerning this gross misbehaviour... you will face some legal sanctions that will make your lives miserable," the letter read.

According to Mayor Mangoh, the act reveals that the two are dishonourable fellows. He also threatened to arrest them whenever they impersonate again.

In his reply to Mangoh's letter, Francis Baleri Nfor, Nkambe 3rd Deputy Mayor, reminded Mangoh that they were all elected and that by the resolutions of the Investiture Committee of the Social Democratic Front, SDF, Mangoh ceased to be councillor."You are neither a councillor nor Mayor of the Nkambe

Council. I have never been sacked from my political party, hence I remain a legitimate elected official," Baleri Nfor fired back.Baleri claims that since his post as Deputy Mayor is recognised by the Minister and SDO, he needs no other authorisation "from an illegal and illegitimate fellow like you to participate in any National event in this municipality."

Baleri denied issuing birth certificates, but stated: "You alone sign them and I am aware of all the malpractices you carry out in this regard."
