Maputo — Mozambican Transport Minister Antonio Mungwambe has demanded immediate improvements in the operations of the Maputo branch of the National Traffic Institute (INAV).
Visiting the traffic services on Friday morning, accompanied by journalists, Mungwambe was angered to find lengthy and chaotic queues resulting from the disorganization of the staff.
The main matter being dealt with at these offices is the issue of new driving licences in line with the standards of SADC (Southern African Development Community). Yet Munguambe found that some of the old licences were still being issued, allegedly because of defects in the new ones.
Much worse than this were the long queues which the Minister regarded as totally unnecessary. He noted that in part the queues built up because there was no receptionist telling users of the services what procedures should be followed.
It also took a long time to deliver the driving licences once they were issued, since they were not filed in alphabetical order.
He ordered the staff to show some respect for the citizens who visit the offices and warned that he would come back on Monday when he expected to see a very different scene.
"By Monday I don't want to see any more of these queues here", stressed Mungwambe. "Citizens must be attended as quickly as possible and with the greatest of respect. A staff member must be placed at the reception to inform people about the procedures".
If INAV had no-one who could perform this task, the Ministry could lend them somebody, he added.
