International Women's Day on March 8 was today marked across the nation in a colorful manner.

Speaking at the celebration here in the capital, the Administrator of the Central region, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, stated that Eritrean women had and are still demonstrating heroic feats be it in the days of the armed struggle or in the post-independence period through standing alongside their male counterparts. Noting that the heroic exploits of Eritrean women are not only confined to the military sphere, he stressed the need for documenting these significant achievements of Eritrean women.

Also speaking on the occasion, the head of NUEW in the Central region, Ms. Tekha Tesfamichael, pointed out that March 8 is a historic event in which Eritrean women renew their pledge to back up the on-going efforts to reinforce our national values. Indicating that the endeavors to achieve food security could not succeed without the active participation of women, she called on women to enhance their contribution in agricultural activities, including soil and water conservation programs.

Likewise, the Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and other government officials awarded prizes to 360 female students who scored outstanding marks in the 2006/2007 8th grade national exams and in the first semester of the present academic year.

Meanwhile, in a press release it issued in connection with International Women's Day, the NUEW disclosed that in collaboration with the Ministry of Education it would work diligently in promoting the active participation of women, especially female youths in the campaign to eradicate illiteracy.
