Monrovia

The Ministry of Education has announced the closure of both public and private schools across the country from March 10, 2008. The closure of schools is expected to last for two weeks.

A release from the Ministry said the suspension of schools and academic activities is in support of the 2008 National Housing and Population Census which begins March 21-27.

The Ministry said classes would resume on Monday, March 31, and that all County and District Education Officers have been instructed to support the program in the national interest.

The 2008 National Housing and Population Census is Liberia's first census exercise in more than 24 years. The last census was conducted in 1984; six years after a civil war erupted in 1990 and lasted for 14 years.

Meanwhile, the Liberia Crusaders for Peace in collaboration with the Liberia Institute of Statistic and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) over the weekend held a cultural night celebration in support of the census.

The cultural festivity which was held together with a musical extravaganza featured both Gospel and secular Liberian musical artists at the Monrovia City Hall.

The Crusaders for Peace cultural troop was also characterized by splendid cultural performances of the Krahn, Dahn, Kpelle, Bassa and the Mandingo tribes in Liberia.

The cultural performances were intended to disseminate census messages in various Liberian vernaculars.

During the program, the Director General of LISGIS, Dr. Edward Liberty urged Liberians to stay home on the day of the census and be part of the counting process which, he said, is necessary for national development.

He said LISGIS' staff have already left for the counties to recruit residents as enumerators and supervisors who know the terrain and understand the various vernaculars.
