Thousands of Buea women took to the celebration grounds (Bongo Square) 8 March to mark their day. Many of them smiled from ear to ear for the fallouts of this year's event. While Governor Eyeya Zanga told the women that the future holds better for them, over 500 women of Fako Women Development Association (FAWODA) alongside Bojongo Court Area Women, Mamouh and a host of others from various villages of Buea rural could easily believe from what they lived on the eve of 8 March with their Member of Parliament, Hon Emilia Mojowa Lifaka.
The Buea MP shared out cutlasses, corn seedlings, a cow, and cash for girls' scholarship. The women spent the whole evening at Hon. Lifaka's Buduma residence dancing and chanting over heavy dining and wining. Best of it all, the women left the MP's residence harvesting a firm promise from Hon. Lifaka to sponsor 25 girls each year at the Buea Women's empowerment centre for the rest of her mandate in parliament. She handed an on-the-spot cheque of cfa five hundred thousand to ensure the promise is fulfilled, and spent over Cfa two Million on the reception.
While those who made it to Hon. Lifaka's enjoyed an added advantage, the rest of Buea women organised merry ceremonies in the quarters to mark their day. Long queues of professional, religious, social and political groups, marched pass before Governor Zanga at the Bongo Square with his charismatic wife leading. Our lady of mount camel and the GTTC music bands animated the day with the famous Anne Munjong of CRTV-Buea, as Master of Ceremonies, keeping the audience in full warmth. South West Provincial Delegate of Women's Empowerment and the Family, Dr. Niger Thomas, corroborated the Governor to promise the launch of next year's Women's Day event in Mamfe. The launching failed this year owing to the violent petrol-hike strike that took a heavy toll on the Province.
