The future of cricket in Cameroon lies in schools as witnessed during the launching ceremony of the 2008 season of the Cameroon cricket federation. Thousands of youths from some 12 secondary schools in the nation's capital, thronged the playground of Lycée General Leclerc in Yaounde, to take part in a mini cricket tournament last Saturday, March 8, 2008.

The players played with youthful gusto as their school mates cheered excitedly each time their scored a run or eliminated a batter. It was interesting to find youths explaining the rules the games to others and genuinely expressing interest in the game.

"I enjoy playing cricket more than football", said Mecaly Walis, a student of the English High school in Yaounde.

the inter school tournament is the result of a project to introduce the game cricket in schools in Cameroon initiated by the Cameroon Cricket federation and the British Council in Cameroon under the Community Regeneration project which seeks to promote development through sports. According to the president of Fecacricket, Victor Agbor-Nso, over 300 youths benefited from the programme in the past two months, from among whom the best were chosen to take art in the tournament. A total of 24 level one cricket coaches were mobilised for this exercise. The equipment used during the training exercise was fabricated by Cameroonian young people with the support of the British High Commission.
