The parliaments of Angola and of Sao Tome and Principe will review the cooperation protocol signed in 2004 by both institutions, in sequence of the visit being paid by the Angolan parliament speaker, Roberto de Almeida to that Lusophone country.

The reassessment aims at identifying eventual actions, in order to turn the accord more dynamic, explained the Angolan parliament speaker, whilst speaking to the press at the international airport of Sao Tome and Principe.

The protocol includes the training of staff and parliamentary upgrading through the holding of workshops for the sharing of mutual knowledge, apart from interchange between parliamentary delegations.

Roberto de Almeida also said that he is in Sao Tome and Principe answering an invitation made by his counterpart, Francisco da Silva, two years ago.

Concerning the electoral process (in Angola), he said that there are good perspectives for holding peaceful legislative elections, next September, bearing in mind the interest shown by voters during the registration process.

The Angolan official said that there is great expectation and mobilisation towards the participation in the polls, mainly by the young generation (1992 to 2008), which never voted.

He also informed that the electoral process foresees a new registration phase between the months of April and May, to cover citizens who turn 18 years until September, therefore enabling them to vote.

Roberto de Almeida commended the institutional cooperation with Sao Tome and Principe, expected to improve in terms of quality, mainly in light of the creation of the Parliament of the Portuguese Speaking Countries Community (CPLP) late 2007.

This Monday's programme includes a visit to the northern region of Sao Tome and an evening cultural event at the Cultural Centre.

On Tuesday, Roberto de Almeida will attend a formal welcoming ceremony at the Sao Tomean Parliament, followed by work meetings with his counterpart, and with the first specialised commission and with the Sao Tome and Principe-Angola parliamentary friendship group.

On Wednesday, the Angolan parliament speaker will meet with the Sao Tomean Head of State, Fradique de Menezes, and with the prime minister, as well as with the leader of the main opposition party.

A trip, on Thursday, to the "Ilhéu das Rosa's" tourism site is also part of the programme of activities of Roberto de Almeida's visit, which is expected to end Friday with the signing of a joint declaration. In this trip, the speaker of the National Assembly is being accompanied by the MPs Jacques Matos Gala and Albertina Teresa José (ruling MPLA party) and Henriques Afonso Raimundo (main opposition UNITA).
