Botswana: Fighters Win

Mogomotsi Moloi

10 March 2008

Gaborone — Mogoditshane Fighters left SSKB Stadium last Saturday in a buoyant mood after walloping inconsistent BDF XI 1-0 through a goal by former Zebras midfielder Masego Ntshingane in the opening half.

Fighters went into the game seeking to redeem their pride after losing to Extension Gunners while BDF XI were riding high after beating ECCO City Greens at the same venue. BDF XI wilted under pressure as Fighters pressed forward but they were lucky not to concede more goals. Since losing Mpho Mabogo and Bernard Semakwezi, BDF XI have struggled upfront. Their new strikers System Mubi, Mokgathi Mokgathi and Edwin Kamwimba have largely failed to deliver. Ntshingane scored the only goal of the match mid first half after unleashing a low shot that was deflected into the net. When Mokgathi got a good chance to equalise, he headed wide. With the guidance of Ntshingane in the midfield, the youthful Fighters showed what they are made of. They played possession football to frustrate their opponents.

Zebras left-winger Nelson 'Viola' Gabolwelwe's was invisible as he appeared to be on holiday. His work rate for BDF XI was questionable and he lost balls easily but he was not substituted. After the break, BDF XI made some substitutions with the hope of increasing their firepower but to no avail. Youngster Keorapetse Baroma was outstanding for BDF XI in midfield but lack of support thwarted his efforts. Fighters' goalkeeper Mogomotsi Ramakwale had one of his best games against Matebele. The towering custodian denied BDF XI a number of times to ensure his side got maximum points. In the 65th minute, Mubi fired a thunderbolt outside the box but a well-positioned Ramakwale was equal to the task. A wasteful Gabolwelwe could have levelled matters in the 72nd minute but his tame shot was easily handled by the goalkeeper. Just before full time, Mubi was unlucky not to equalise when his attempt hit the upright with Ramakwale beaten. Fighters coach Letang Kgengwenyane said their objective is to end the season in the top eight and they will definitely do so.

He was however worried by the inconsistency of his charges. "We are on and off but things would be fine," he said. Meanwhile, defending champions ECCO City Greens won the local derby at the Francistown Stadium when they beat TASC 3-1. In Lobatse BMC beat Jwaneng Comets 2-0.
