Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr Hassan Zaku, yesterday in Abuja, charged Nigerian scientists to focus their attention on software development and production.

He gave the challenge when he visited National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), to inspect its facilities, adding that with the launch of the country's communication satellite, Nigeria Sat 1, it was time to harness the potential of indigenous technology to build a locally madesatellite.

"We are looking forward to the launch of a satellite that is wholly built by Nigerian scientists. Scientists should work toward achieving self reliance in technology and development of software materials," he said.

Zaku said it was necessary for Nigerian scientists to concentrate their efforts on software developmentand production, to boost science and technology in the country and challenged NASRDA to work out a blue-print for the development of a space technology programme for the country.

Zaku, however, said the use of Nigeria Sat 1 inenvironmental management would be beneficial to government and the people.

In his remarks, Professor Robert Boroface, Director-General NASRDA, said NASRDA was looking into ways of attracting private-sector investmentin space technology development projects and urged the Federal Government to give priority attentionto space management and technology development efforts.
