Justice Idris Kutigi — The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, has charged Judges and Kadis in the country to shun acts that could make a mockery of the judiciary and thereby bring the judiciary into disrepute.

Addressing the opening ceremony of a Refresher Course organized by the National Judicial Institute (NJI) for Judges and Kadis in Abuja yesterday, Kutigi said judges must strive to attain perfection inspite of adversities that may appear in the course of their duties.

In the words of the CJN: "You must continue to shun all acts and omissions which will tarnish your exalted position as well as make a mockery of your judicial office thereby bringing the judiciary into disrepute".

He urged the Judges and Kadis to be self critical and to use the opportunity of the course to enhance their efficiency, saying that improved skills boost confidence and lead to proactive adjudication.

The CJN explained that the refresher course is part of the continuing legal education that the Judiciary has embarked on since the establishment of the NJI by Decree (now Act) No. 28 of 1991.

Speaking in the same vein, the NJI Administrator, Justice Timothy Oyeyipo stressed the need for Judges and Kadis to be re-acquainted with crucial aspects of the bench to which they have been invited to sit and deliver justice without fear or favour.

Oyeyipo explained that the refresher course would further strengthen their capacity to face the challenges posed by an evolving society, explaining that: "It is therefore my firm belief that the opportunity for intensive interaction and cross fertilization of ideas afforded by this refresher course will also provide your Lordships the template upon which you will carry out successful careers on the bench".

According to the NJI Administrator, the refresher course is aimed at refreshing knowledge and inspiring the Judges and Kadis to a greater commitment to their duties as the course is designed to give them a chance to sit back and evaluate their performances so far.
