Bauchi

With 93 doctors to take care of the 4.6 million people in Bauchi state, the state government has recruited 30 Egyptian doctors to bridge the doctor/patient ratio in the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Altine Bello, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Bauchi that all the Egyptian doctors can communicate fluently in English.'

'The cost implication to the state ismoderate and beneficial to both parties. "We have offered them fantastic remuneration, including befitting residential accommodation and carloans," she said.

The commissioner, however, expressed concern at the reluctance by Nigerian doctors to take up appointment with the State Government in spite of the offer made to them.' 'We have advertised for 60 vacancies, but only 39 indigenous doctors applied.' 'Regrettably, not all the 39 candidates who applied for the vacancy responded for interviews," Bello said.

She expressed optimism that the Egyptian doctors would help in ameliorating the shortage of doctors in the state's health service.

Bello reiterated the commitment of government to revitalising the health sector adding that adequate measures had been put in place to curtail the recent outbreak of measles.

The commissioner counseled mothers against bathing their infected children with cold water, saying doing so could put the infected children at risk of further complications.
