Kasane — Police in Kasane are investigating a case in which a suspected thief was shot dead at Plateau on Wednesday.

Officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Victor Motsu of Botswana police said in an interview that the middle aged man was shot dead by a patrol of police and wildlife officers. The patrol was dispatched following a tip off that two men were seen carrying bags and household items into the bush.

"Our officers and wildlife officers found that a house belonging to a wildlife officer had been broken into and goods stolen," he said.

He said the police and wildlife officials followed the men's footprints and found them in a nearby bush. Mr Mutsu said one of the men was shot dead during the encounter, while the other managed to escape. Mr Motsu appealed to the public to come and identify the deceased at Kasane mortuary, as well as to help catch his partner. He however warned people not to try to apprehend the man as he might be armed.
