Francistown — Maintenance of Tlokweng College of Education facilities, which started on February 5 is expected to be complete March 11.
The Assistant Minister of Education, Mr Peter Siele said in Parliament on Wednesday that the college management is attending to items that are not of capital nature such as the improvement of sanitation in female toilets and replacement of curtains in the hostels.
He was responding to the MP for South East North, Mr Olebile Gaborone, who sought to know actions taken by the ministry in addressing problems contained in the recent petition by the college students.
Mr Siele said the college management and the Student Representative Council are closely monitoring the kitchen and food preparation to ensure the highest standards of hygiene.
He told the House that the proposal for all students to stay off campus has not been found necessary in view of the on-going renovation at the hostels and the monitoring of food preparation.
He said his ministry continues to address the issue of staff accommodation in educational institutions including the colleges of education. He indicated that 11 three bedroomed houses have been purchased from the Botswana Housing Corporation for the Tlokweng College of Education to augment the existing houses.
The units have been issued to academic staff as institutional houses.
In addition Mr Siele explained that the home economics and science laboratory and the library were part of the recently completed renovated projects, which started in September 2006. The structures were handed over to the college in June 2007 and are now in use.
