The local celebration will be held in Kanye under the theme: 'Shaping Progress'.

The day offers governments and societies the opportunity to reflect on the progress or setbacks encountered on issues that affect women. Although the day has been around for sometime, many women in Botswana are still unaware of its existence and what it stands for.

Ms Gabalemoge James, a street vendor at the bus rank, said in an interview that the only women's day she is aware of is when women at her church gather for an exclusive women prayer session on Thursdays.

"That is the only women's day I know; I don't know of any other," she said in an interview.

Ms James was one of 10 women, including three university students, interviewed randomly at the Main Mall and the station to determine awareness. Only three seemed to be aware of the day.

Ms Vuyelwa Mvungama, the principal gender officer in the Women's Affairs department , said that they are doing everything they can to inform people about this day and what it stand for.

"We always talk about this day during workshops, and in our address to councils. We also advertise on the radio, Tv and billboards."

Ms Mvungama expressed hope that the additional offices that they have opened in villages such as Serowe, will enable them to reach more people.

"For a long time, we had only three offices in the country and maybe one gender officer, but now that we have opened more offices, we are hoping that it will help get the gender issues to the public."

She urged other departments to take part in the celebration and help make the message known across the nation.

"It is important that women should know and celebrate the day. They should be proud of themselves and their worth in the society," Ms Mvungagama said.
