Freedom Newspaper (Raleigh, North Carolina)

COLUMN
11 March 2008
Posted to the web 11 March 2008

My attention has been drawn to the baseless, unfounded and "propaganda" deceptive news reports calculated to dispute my story on Lamin Waa Juwara's appointment as Deputy Permanent Secretary.

My sources are unshakable and I stood by my story that Waa Juwara was appointed Deputy Permanent Secretary by the President. I personally saw Lamin Waa Juwara's appointment letter. Those making the "unsubstantiated allegations" against the Freedom Newspaper should desist from their "hate and malicious" propaganda against Freedom. I am not taking such bogus and unfounded allegations lightly. In view of these developments, I have decided to clear the air.

Juwara's appointment might have been rescinded, after the publication of my story, but based on the letter I have seen, he was indeed appointed Deputy Permanent Secretary.

I lived in Brikama and have no cause to mislead the Gambian public. My story was well grounded with factual information. Juwara himself has been telling his loved ones that he had secured a new Government job.

That said, why should anyone makeup stories about Waa Juwara's appointment. I stood by my story, today, tomorrow and the day after. I will never recant my story.

I have the following questions for Juwara and his Jaliba's: Why were you at the State House on the eve of your appointment? What led to the cancellation of your appointment? Why do you refused to serve as nominated Councilor for Brikama Ward? Why do you keep soliciting favors from the Local Government Minister Sambou? Can you tell us something about the Government car story?

It's my firm belief and conviction that the "malicious" reaction necessitated by my piece was uncalled for. The Freedom Newspaper story was 100 percent correct.

The President reserves the right to hire and cancel appointments. I leaked the story well before Juwara left the State House. If he was not hired, I wouldn't have reported it.

I was flabbergasted when I heard Waa Juwara saying that the position of DPS was too junior for him. The same Waa Juwara was working hand in hand with the cleansing services in Brikama to clean the locality. I personally interviewed him on the site, where he was busy cleaning the streets of Brikama. Juwara's "jongya" or slavery if you like, is no secret to the people of Brikama.

Finally, I want to assure the Editors and the readership of the Freedom Newspaper that the story on Waa Juwara was factual. I have nothing to gain to report that Waa Juwara hired as DPS, when there was no such appointment.

Throughout, my association with the Freedom Newspaper, I have never reported any erroneous story and will never file one. I love my job and I am proud to do it with honesty and professionalism. I report the truth and nothing but the truth. I thank you for your attention.
