The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System, Sophie de Caen, leaves Cameroon tomorrow 12 march 2008 at the end of her assignment as Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cameroon. During her stay in Cameroon, Sophie De Caen, emphasised consistently the importance of Cameroon achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
Mrs Sophie De Caen has been asked to take up the job as Director of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Fund Secretariat at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The fund is financed by the government of Spain and managed by the UNDP for joint UN projects in the field.
Since August 2005 when Sophie De Caen assumed her duty as Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Systems in Cameroon and UNDP Resident Representative, she has worked tirelessly to ensure that the UN priorities are integrated into Cameroon's government action plan and national programmes and projects. The current 2008-2012 United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) prepared and launched during Sophie De Caen's term of office in Cameroon has five key areas of actions namely: sustainable Growth, Social Development, Governance, Crisis Prevention and management and environmental issues. Furthermore, the stand-up campaign launched in 2006 has been one of the out-going UN Resident Coordinator's outstanding concerns and her regular exchange with the media. After being in Cameroon for three years, Sophie De Caen, says there are a number of positive issues and challenges that need to be overcome.

While leaving Cameroon, Sophie De Caen says it has been interesting work here as it has been a tremendous working experience for her. She notes that it has been very exceptional and positive for her working with the Prime Minister, Head of Government and several other ministers. Sophie De Caen says from the few field trips she has made within some areas in Cameroon and the rapid results recorded from certain projects within a short period of time, she feels that there is remarkable hope for Cameroon as far as development is concerned.
