Congo-Kinshasa: Editor of Private Newspaper Abducted, Detained in Secret Location Following Publication of Articles About President's Health

press release

On 7 March 2008, Nsimba Embete Ponte, the editor of the privately-owned twice-weekly newspaper "L'interprète", published in Kinshasa, was abducted by unidentified armed men near a bus stop in the Kinshasa neighbourhood of Masina.

The journalist is being held in a secret location and the official motives for his arrest remain unknown.

According to information obtained by JED through his family, the journalist had received threats following the publication of a series of articles about the health status of President Joseph Kabila in the newspaper issue number 782, dated 29 February.

JED is urging the government to reveal the location of Embete Ponte's detention as well as the official reasons for his arrest. Should the arrest be work related, JED is demanding that it be deferred to the appropriate judge.
